Nice!

We have a mystery gourd/squash/pumpkin vine along our chicken coop — clearly a stray seed from kitchen scraps. It's putting our flowers and we're excited to find out what's growing.

While the fruits are small, gently arrange the vine so the pumpkin is positioned stem straight up. This can help you get an evenly round pumpkin without a flat/blanched side.

You can also slide a bit of foam or cardboard or something under the fruit, to keep it off the dirt. It's another cosmetic improvement, and may also keep some bugs from chewing.

Our backyard mystery squash has turned out to be pumpkin. It's growing up over a chainlink fence that is already covered with grapevine, so it has a lot to hold on to. Still, we're collecting old pantyhose (hard to find these days) to make slings to hold the fruits as they get larger.
