Well I have two pots of this plant being U.reniformis next to each other, for some time now I have noticed some unusual growth form beneath the pots ,its actually stated to grow new shoots out of the pot and formed stems under the water with visible traps looking very similar to Gibba very interesting to see

These are called aquatic stolons of the epiphytic utrics, not only reniformis but also U.humboldtii and some others form stolons like these in water. It's good to keep these guys separate from the rest of the collection as these stolons can colonise nearby pots with other plants:) Interesting photos!

I hope so too! They've got amazing flowers. Myself I'm waiting for my U.campbelliana to flower, I hope it'll send out flowerstalks this winter - has got 10 leafs, enough foliage I think. Are you growing any more utrics?

Yeah the leafs are boring  but I like them because they're not problematic plants, I don't have to check them out every day and they have really nice flowers sometimes. I just gave a look to your growlist, haven't seen it before, the ammount of neps you keep is unbelievable! Have you got photos of your U.asplundii foliage? Did it flower?

Is this the f. courte clone of U. reniformis? I've been told by a few growers that U. reniformis (especially the larger versions) don't like to sit in water. It seems that no one told your plant of this 'rule' ...

Where do I get in line to purchase some of the 'spare' seed?

Hi Ron,
I've heard this one too!:D I've got a small form of U.reniformis and the bottom of the terrarium is always flooded, he doesn't look unhappy.

Well if I'll get any campb seeds you'll be the first one to receive them;) Got my fingers crossed for this winter!

Supposedly the larger the rennie, the less they like to be wet. I kept one of my large forms outside all summer and because of the super-high heat, I had to keep it sitting in a small amount of water to keep it from drying out between daily waterings. Surprisingly, it handled both the heat & the excess water. My small form rennies also do not appear to have any issues being kept wet.

One of the other things I've heard about reniformis is that they prefer peat-based mixes. This factoid I've found to be true (ime). The large form plants in peat based media grow much larger & faster than those in 100% LFS. So far, I've had the opposite experience with the Orchidioides group - but I'm still playing...

Sounds interesting! Maybe I'll try to add some peat to my growing mix for this species too. I keep it in 100% LFS. You kept the guy outside all summer? Sounds interesting, what were the temperatures like? I never even tried to move them outside the terrarium!

Each time I tried pure LFS, the plants barely grew at all. In peat-based mixes they thrived... ;)

I just moved my largest pot of the large form rennie outside as something of an experiment. I fully expected to need to bring it in but - nope. Here's a thread on it. I'm astounded that it handled the temps and is now adding significant new growth - go figure!

WOW, that's really awesome! Well the groeth of the reniformis in pure sphag isn't that bad, over 15 leafs at the moment but that's the small form. I'll give your soil mix a try soon, thanks!

limeslide wrote:Nice growing, reniformis is one of the few utrics I've wanted to keep. It broke my heart when I found out it needed HL conditions.
While many prefer HL conditions, I started the thread quoted above to show that they may not need HL conditions to grow... I don't think 90-100*F daytime & 75*F nightime qualifies as HL ... Although I haven't tested them, I suspect that the smaller forms are also tolerant of warmer conditions. A nice, easy way to start in the group is with U. nephrophylla - beautiful white flowers....
