Trimming back dead Cephalotus Crown

Will it cause any issues to trim back a dying Cephalotus crown? I do not see any new growth on it, and I would like to remove it to ensure no mold ensues. If so, do you trim it down to the soil line, and will it be an issue to leave the rest under the soil? See photo below.

I normally leave mine until its dead enough to just pull out gently. Good airflow is a big thing that helps prevent mold and not over watering.
