So I know that there’s like a megapost on starting TC, but the kit that is mentioned along with the website it was on is a 404 unfortunately, and another link is as well. These are places that sell some (maybe all) of the stuff needed , so I’m hoping maybe anyone here who does TC might have other resources to share.

Also this probably seems like a silly question, but is there like a short list of must haves for starting? I only ask because I’m going to ask for some of these things for Xmas, and I’m going to buy the rest myself, but I’m not sure with my back problems how well this hobby might work out, so I’m worried about dropping that much money and potentially not really being able to use it properly. I thought perhaps there was some stuff you could skip in the beginning so that yeah I’m not totally screwing myself over.

Is there anything besides using an old fish tank that you can use in place of some of the more expensive stuff? Also I’m wondering if anyone has tried sterilizing an old tank and has advice?

These are the main things that I wanted to know. Maybe as a bonus question, how long do you usually sit for like a session or whatever of these things? I’m hoping I can break it up a bit maybe.

They sell a starter kit for $80.00. That is just the media. Check this sticky, tissue-culture-faq-t1426.html
it has all the info and some links to needed items. Below youtube links are also good. The girl that does plantsinjars knows her stuff and has one video that shows you how to set up a room, tools needed, substitutions, etc.

Wow thanks so much guys!

Andy - yeah that’s the sticky I skimmed through to see what I would need. 2 out of 4 of the websites listed are 404 unfortunately.

That kit actually might help although I think at first I might try to use substitutes and see how well that works. I feel like it could be helpful for people who don’t have a lot of money for startup costs.

Thanks very much for the YT channels as well. I subbed to them and will see what they have. :D

Elaineo- wow that thread is great! I read through it and it’s really interesting. How did your attempt pan out in the end?

I definitely want to try the low budget attempt. I think money is probably a huge deterrent for people who want to try it, and I would love to be able to tell them that it doesn’t have to be.

Hey so I have a question. Do the jars and pipettes and whatever need to be glass? All the ones I have seen are plastic. I can always try to look into it if y’all don’t know
:)

Yes but if you search yo can find what they were referring to. Just takes a little leg work and you should be able to find all you need. Once you ad it all up you might find the kit is cheaper and much easier to work with. Plus, they have awesome support even after they sell you product.
If you watch the "plantsinjars" girl she tells you what can and can not be used and also advises of less expensive items for those just starting out. I watched several of her videos and learned quite a lot. Which is one reason I hit the brakes momentarily as I want to have enough space which I am currently limited to right now. Amazon carries a lot of the items for a fairly reasonable price.
Jars do not need to be glass but they need to be a specific type. It slipped my old memory but she explains it. EVERYTHING needs to be 100% sterile and you will want a sterile enclosure that gets sprayed with Lysol before each use. I bought one for 20 bucks with a removeable fan.
