One of my reasons of joining this FlytrapCare forum community is to learn more about sundews and giving them the best care possible, and with that, I have two questions:

1. My growing zone is 6b, what type(s) of sundews that can grow where I live? I'm in southeastern Pennsylvania.
2. Is it really important to have them grow outside? Because sometimes the weather where I'm from can be unpredictable besides during summer.

Thanks for replying!

I grow mine inside, not sure about your first question.

You can grow intermedia, rotundafolia, and some filiformis. Summer weather shouldn't be a problem as long as you keep them wet. Winter is easier to do if you plant them in large pots or group plantings. I use 15 gallon feed troughs and have a bog planting in it. Many of the tropical sundews can be grown indoors under lights. Drosera capensis is one of the easiest and most forgiving sundews to grow and it does very well indoors. If you are just getting started, I would recommend starting with a cape.

Great info! And yes, if I do get a sundew next year it'll be my first one, so I'll definitely go for the Drosera capensis then. Does it require dormancy btw?

I think the filiformis and Intermedia native to NJ should great for you outside. There is also a filiformis native to Nova Scotia that should be super cold hardy.

@bcavanau, how exactly do you put your Temperate plants(such as that lovely intermedia there)into dormancy if they are indoors?

Ummm...yeah. I haven't actually thought that far ahead. I am currently looking on FB Marketplace, craigslist, etc. for a cheap refrigerator. If that falls through, I could probably put them in a corner of my basement of garage, depending on how the temps actually come up.

Intermedia may not be as uptight about temperature as light levels. I had some under intense lights last winter and when I moved them outside this spring they went dormant. I guess my lights were more intense than the sun.

Tropical sundews can be grown indoors. Temperate have to be outdoors.
