I was trimming some dead foliage today, was looking at this moss growing out of control. could it cause rhizome rot in the winter? should i remove?

My opinion, and only my opinion. Live sphagnum has antimicrobial properties so it would likely help prevent rot. I might trim it back some but overall I wouldn't worry about it with a sarr. Dionea or drosera, maybe

Sarracenia don't have any problem growing through a mound of live sphagnum moss, as long as it isn't ridiculously deep (and yours isn't). During the winter, moss like this gives your plant some extra insulation from the cold. Also, I've found that my Sarracenia grow better with live sphagnum moss on the surface of their pots.

I agree with Panman and MikeB that the live sphagnum has antibacterial properties and it is rare for plants to rot when growing in it. However, it will block out light for smaller plants, so it might be necessary to trim it back for baby Sarrs, flytraps, or other small CPs.

I'd leave it. If the plant is larger and the sphag won't choke it out, there's no problem. Plus, IMO sarrs growing in big lumps of healthy live sphag looks really cool.
