Is sphagnum moss or peat moss better for venus fly traps?

That is kind of asking like which is better, Hellmans or Dukes. (Those are brands of mayonnaise, by the way).

I have recently started using pure sphagnum for my flytraps and I'm pretty happy with the results. The negative to it is that it is expensive and is difficult to remove from the roots when transplanting.

On the other side, peat/perlite is cheap and easy to work with. I think it retains moisture better than sphagnum so that can be a bonus.

Personally, I think my flytraps grow better in pure sphagnum but there are plenty of people who will swear by using peat.

i bough a vft from lowes that was in lfsm and it grew CRAZY fast, putting out a new leaf every other day even tho it was in a 2 inch pot.
then I moved it to a 5 inch pot of 60% peat/ 30% perlite/10% sand.
It grows much slower, but maybe that's because it was a million small divisions.
but since peat is cheaper, Im sticking with it

I gotta say, it's hard to find quality Sphagnum for good prices.

I don't like how peat gets algae and other stuff growing on it.

Use a sphagnum top dressing.

This is what I use. It is pretty decent. Not top shelf, but close.

Either is fine. Peat moss is easier to remove from the roots however. You have to be VERY careful removing LFSM as the roots get tangled up in it.

Matt has a couple varieties of good stuff available usually; Chilean and New Zealand.
