Soil mix becoming smelly

I repotted some plants a few days ago, today I noticed that the soil mix had started to smell. Is this normal and what should I do about it? What causes the soil to become smelly?

Thanks

It depends on what kind of smell you are talking about. A sulphury smell is caused when the peat moss starts to break down in anaerobic conditions. This is most common in pots that are sitting continously in a tray of water and the tray not drying out. A more cesspool type smell I have found on my sphagnum moss that I allowed to sit in water during the hot summer months. Whether or not it is a problem depends on the plant. Most sarrs like flava, purpurea, and psittacina will probably not care. Leucos and oreos prefer to dry out some. Flytraps would not do well.
