I decided to feed one tiny little trap a piece of bloodworm (blue circled trap). Bloodworms are very nutritious, so it has been digesting it for a week. During that time, 2 other traps closed for some reason, and just opened today with a surprise: they each caught a tiny bug (traps circled in red).

I thought such a small fly trap clone in an indoor bog terrarium growing in live sphagnum would not be able to hunt without help. I guess I was wrong.

The tiny bugs are clearly not as nutritious as bloodworms because the traps only stayed closed for a few days.

It must be the quality of your light which turns the traps very red even when theynare still fairly small. All of mine are mostly green with hardly any redness, even the larger new sd kronos traps that are approaching 1inch. It does seem like this cultivar makes bigger traps faster than DCXL.

If you took one of your SD kronos and grew it outdoors, it would be interesting to see if it becomes greenish like mine.

Red coloring is increased by using more intense light as well as more hours of intense light per day. My artificial lights do not reach the peak intensity of sunlight at noon on a clear summer’s day, but they are quite intense and I have them on for 16 hours per day.

Kronos’s huge traps take a very long time and more intense and longer duration light in order to turn red. The smaller traps from new divisions turn red very fast and under much weaker light.

The biggest traps are very thick skinned and rigid, which may explain why more intense light is needed to turn them deep purple red.

One month later, the traps are getting larger. It is difficult to feed the tiny traps compared to the adult sized traps.

It has been almost 11 months since I cut the tiny flower stalk and put the cut stalk into live sphagnum. The clone has been indoors under 16 hours of artificial light all year. I moved it into dead sphagnum in a large plastic cup and have been feeding it meatballs of blood worms. It is alreay adult sized!

They look great. Do you think they would’ve done well too if planted straight into dead LFS moss

I think cloning from a cutting is more successful in live sphagnum. The rapid growth to adulthood was more due to the strong artificial lighting and blood worms.

Jesus that was fast. My flower stalk cutting is about 6 months old and still about as big as a dime. Although I do have it out for dormancy right now. I should experiment with artificial lights.
