All I know is the moss I bought from this eBay seller doesn’t appear to be red. I mean, it appears to be sphagnum moss. It doesn’t appear to be red, nor long fiber. Not complaining, just not sure what I could use it for. It was infested with ants and debris

I'm probably going to grow and resell it. There's really no point in putting trash and debris into nepenthes pots.
For those who are reading this topic: Don't buy the moss, it's useless to you unless 1) you have lots of spare time and know how to seperate all the debris or 2) want to start growing and selling the moss.

Interestingly enough, there seems to be a hitchhiker drosera in it. This is sort of cool because it is possible that it grew there naturally as opposed to the seller throwing seeds in his moss. Any ID?

Looks like rotundifolia.

That, sir, is a rotundafolia. I've seen them growing in the wild in Vermont. Due to the fact that he said he harvested it from his land in Minnesota, that makes total sense. Very cool.

Oh, and mine isn't red at all. I'll see what happens with some good light.

Say, does this count as a new location-specific variety? D. Rotundifolia "Ely, Minnesota"

I would say that it does! I was going to post this in another thread but I'll do it here instead. I was pretty bummed when the live 'red' sphagnum I bought refuses to turn red for me but today I found a welcomed surprise. 7 Drosera rotundafolia seedlings. Yay! I hope they will tolerate this Georgia heat okay. We will find out. Maybe I'll move one inside for safe keeping.

Oh yeah, take good care of those rare seedlings! I found a few in my batch and potted them up, but they shriveled and died (probably too hot in California).

I understand that D. Rotundiflora is meant for full sun but apparently, you have to acclimate them slowly.
Mine are quite small, about 1-2 inches across. They grow really slowly... :?

My red sphagnum from Maine is about 98% green. I see a bit of red in one of the trays. Honestly, I'm just glad that it's growing so well in my sweltering weather.

Some of mine, and even some “red” in the moss. I think these are delicate as they are even suffering a bit in the grow tent.

Those are names that the seller gave them. The Citrus Red is starting to show some color. They're growing in 8 x 10 inch (20 x 25 centimeter) leftover trays from take-out food. Since they're starting to top the trays, I'm thinking about putting each one in its own 1020 tray this fall. Then I should have moss to sell next summer.

This one is a local. I'm not sure which species it is, but it's always medium-green, compact habit, and relatively slow growing. I have it in a 7 inch (18 centimeter) leftover bowl from a microwave meal. I'll have to move it to new quarters by spring; this plastic doesn't hold up well in ultraviolet light.

@MikeB is there a good place to buy different species of live sphagnum? Hoping to try some different cultivars...

I highly doubt that Ebay/Etsy is a good source of sphagnum moss...
They only sell the green variety with good quality.

I don't see many people selling live sphagnum moss. Of the ones that do, their moss is usually green. Matt occasionally has sphagnum moss for sale, but he's out of stock at this time.

I bought my moss from an eBay seller called "ads.ink". He doesn't have any moss for sale right now; that shows up in the fall and winter. He'll have anywhere from 5-15 listings at a time. I don't know if these are different species or just different color varieties.

I did a quick look on eBay and Etsy and found these:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/373662828902
https://www.etsy.com/listing/1031345179 ... agnum-moss

The eBay seller has good feedback. I've never purchased anything from that Etsy seller.
