I have used quartz sand (washed with 50 l of tap water and than again with a few litters of distilled water, to clean the quartz sand) from drip irrigation system that has sand media filters for cleaning the water. I had it from a friend, Florin Sova, from a agricultural station. So, i give you another idea, from where you can get the sand. If you have a station or a person in your area that works there, try to get some quartz sand from there.
Drip irrigation, also known as trickle irrigation or micro irrigation or localized irrigation, is an irrigation method that saves water and fertilizer by allowing water to drip slowly to the roots of plants, either onto the soil surface or directly onto the root zone, through a network of valves, pipes, tubing, and emitters.

Sand media filters provide filtration up to 200 mesh, which is necessary to clean surface water and water from open canals for drip irrigation.
