I got this purp this spring and it did okay this summer. It put up a new pitcher early and then quit exhibiting any growth. I expected this from a purp during the summer and expected some activity this fall. As you can see, that didn't happen. The crown seems in good shape but I an worried that all of the mature pitchers have died off. Do I unpot it to check the rhizome or let it ride until I repot in spring? I'm in zone 7b.

Are you sure it's a Purp?
I have a Purp ssp Purp (red) and a Purp var Venosa (green), and they look very different. I'm not an expert on Sarrs....yet, but yours looks like it has a lot of Rubra in it.

It's a purp purp. Those leaves are immature pitchers. They are only an inch or so long. The actual purp leaves died off which is what has me concerned.

I'd let it finish going dormant and let it ride. It's still green, so it's not dead. Wait for Spring before you do anything, it'll probably surprise you.

I have had really bad experiences with CPN plants they seem to be out of gas for lack of a better term, but seem to do just fine after dormancy. I have never lost a plant from them but they just don't seem to do anything the 1st year even if i get them early spring, never seen that from anywhere else.

I'm glad to hear that. I got a leucophylla at the same time. While it is doing better than the purp, it isn't robust like the rhizomes I got from Flytrap Store.

Hey Panman! I think your 'mother plant' has passed on to bog heaven and now you have two or more divisions growing. I have had a purp now for twenty one months. It continued to shrink for over a year but I think it may be on a better trajectory now and has attained the size of a half dollar! I think I would let it ride and repot in the spring.

That makes a lot of sense. I couldn't figure out why the original had started producing immature pitchers.

If CPN is the nursery I'm thinking of, those guys are selling smaller plants for less money. It's a niche but I got the world's smallest cephalotus from them. That's probably also a factor in why their plants seem less "responsive" during the first season. I mean you can get plants cheaper, I guess it just depends on how patient you are. Small is *small* to those guys.

I suppose though if I'm turning out a bunch of seed grown (I'm guessing some of them are probably seed grown based on the growth rate), I don't know what kind of conditions I'd have for them or how often they'd eat :/

Price is why I get from cpn, mike is actually a pretty nice guy and helps with educating the community a lot. I don't mind getting the seedlings and small divisions, but I've also never had a larger plant haul off and croak like that either. I have noticed the plants tend to be light starved, but I'm sure you have it in good lighting conditions. It's strange. Have you checked the soil under magnification for mites?
