I'd personally be worried about one of two things, 1) too fine of sand and it could compact (which can be an issue even in mixtures), or 2) too coarse of sand could potentially drain too easily and wouldn't hold water well without any organic or clay particles. Is finding peat a problem in your area?

You won’t be able to draw water up to the root system when using the tray method.

If you then add more water into the tray to make up for lack of water retention the roots will rot

Not using tray method ......
Forgetting to water almost every day will dry the roots out and kill the plant

Using pure sand has too many drawbacks
