I had dinner tuesday night with author/explorer Stewart McPherson. He had a copy of his new two volume book "Carnivorous Plants and Their Habitats" and I looked through it. It is packed with great habitat information and wonderful photos. It's a little expensive at $65 per volume, but I am planning on buying it. He is a very interesting guy, a Brit now living in Sydney, Australia. He has recently discovered several new nepenthes species in the Philippines that look awesome. He is like a walking encyclopedia of information about Nepenthes habitats. Every Nepenthes species I ask him about he had visited them in the wild and could describe it's growing environment in detail. He was in Southern California only for a couple of days then he was off to south america to climb some new Tapuis. I recommend his new book.

Carnivorous Plants and Their Habitats is a wonderful two-volume book. I have both volumes and love them. Great work, very good writing, technical and informative but not dauntingly dry, very complete, lively and beautifully illustrated. Stewart McPherson's "Carnivorous Plants and Their Habitats" is very highly recommended (by me, anyway) to any carnivorous plant lover. They can be purchased at Stewart's website:

Wow, that's great! I got a chance to look through the books when I was at Steve's house. It made me want to purchase them, but at $65 a book, it was a bit steep for me (yes, I'm very, very cheap). Maybe I'll get them as a Christmas present someday

I just ordered volume 1 on Amazon. I already have Savage Gardens and Growing Carnivorous plants by Barry Rice, and this book really looks interesting. I paid $65.00 plus shipping, but I saw it listed for over $100.00 on Ebay and from some other Amazon sellers. If I
like it I'll buy volume 2 next.

very interesting, heard of some of those books before at redfern. I don't need to buy them, i have two public libraries near me, and i can just go and find these books, if they don't have them, i can request for the book, and they'll get it for me, is a good way to save money!
But owning the collection of CP books would be really nice for my small library!

If you buy either of the two volumes of "Carnivorous Plants and Their Habitats" directly from the author Stewart McPherson's website (http://redfernnaturalhistory.com/books) it will cost just over $50.00 plus shipping, for a few dollars more you can get it signed by the author, and he will undoubtedly receive a larger percentage of the sale price.

Thanks for the hint Steve. Unfortunately shortly after I posted my comment about buying volume one, I begged my wonderful wife to let me buy Volume 2 also. I purchased it for $65.00 on Amazon. Should provide me with some great summer reading material !

I just received both volumes in the mail today. Beautiful two volume set loaded with great photographs and tons of information. I'm really going to enjoy diving into these books.

These are some of the BEST books that I have read...

Carnivorous Plants and their Habitats is an outstanding encyclopedic work that covers the ecology, diversity, and natural history of each carnivorous plant genus in great detail. Each genus chapter is a self contained treatise with the headings: Distribution, Botanical History, Plant Structure, Habits and Ecology, Traditional Uses, Associated Life, Cultivation Requirements, Conservation Status. These volumes will be invaluable to botanists, naturalists, and horticulturalists, as well as anyone with an interest in carnivorous plants. I found the five introductory chapters of Volume 1 to be particularly interesting to read and Andreas Fleischmann’s “Evolution of Carnivorous Plants” to be quite thought-provoking. Volume 2 includes the formal descriptions of four new Nepenthes species (N. gantungensis, N. hamiguitanensis, N. holdenii, and N. palawanensis). The chapter on Philcoxia introduces three rare species that are potentially carnivorous

There's a guy on Ebay now selling both volumes for $55.00. Just FYI in case any one is interested. Sounds like a steal.
