Can live moss be placed on top of the growing media just to make it look natural ?

Well if the media under the soil is the proper mix than yes it can.

But you need to make sure you don't just take any moss from outside.
It should be a safe one. I would highly suggest you use live sphagnum moss.
But when you use it give it a trim every once in a while so it doesn't bury your plant.

Ive tried it from experience thinking it would look great and it does....
however i was finding i was having to keep the moss far wetter to keep green than the actual compost needed to be for the plants.

Some people like to use moss as a top dressing, but as Jaws alluded to, you need to keep it trimmed as it can overgrow small seedlings or new divisions. That said, most moss is going to need more water than your flytrap should have, and your flytrap requires more sunlight than most moss will be happy with.
