Hi,
My U.nephrophylla produced a flowerstalk a few weeks ago, yesterday the first flower opened:) I really like this species because it grows vigorously, quickly forming a dense carpet of leaves and also flowers easily.

I completely agree! I love U. nephrophylla. Along with U. livida & sandersonii, I think it should be one of the 1st utrics people get. (Personally, I love the 2 protruding 'eyes').

Yeah I agree that livida and sandersonii look cool with all those flowers too, and they are great starters! Really nice pics of your nephrophylla, have you got the pink-flowered form? I was never able to get it here in Poland.

No - I'm not certain if I've seen it available here but most of my indoor growing space is being allocated to the larger Orchidioides (& a few Neps & Helis). My growlist needs to start shrinking ...

Heheh you sure must post some pics of them!:) I'll take some pics of my terrarium in december when I'll be back home again. I don't have much place in it, U.reniformis with it's large leafs is a problem, it shades other plants!

Not much to see at the time - just a bunch of pots in some tanks with leaves. Heck, most of the plants aren't even putting up mature leaves yet. As they flower or as the leaves become something somewhat representative of the species (or I just want to snap a pic), I try to add the pics to my growlist. I add pics in there pretty regularly.

The large reniformis is truly a beast - that's why I grew my largest pot of them outside this summer. It's also why I traded for some smaller forms - hopefully the same flower but much better use of space. Mature plants of U. humboldtii, reniformis, nelumbifolia & alpina 'Pittier Moon'** all want more space than I can really afford to give them. I'm hoping they'll settle for 4-6" pots and flower from them...

** - a friend said he had leaves up to 45cm on this one!!

45cm on an U.alpina?? You're kidding me, right? sounds crazy, maybe the plant was light-starved? The biggest leaves of U.alpina I've seen were around 30cm tall.

I've got the "small" form of U.reniformis, but even then it can be a problem due to the size of it's leaves. I can't even imagine keeping the normal form in my terrarium.

I see I must register myself on terraforums soon and pay your growlist a visit:)

'Pittier Moon' is a unique plant - this is a non-light-starved size ...

No, it's not necessary but maybe I'll start writing there too:) The 'Pittier Moon' alpina is really awesome, I must get one when I'll make the new terrarium.

It's funny that in Europe, you can easily make that statement & it's true. In the huge USA, there is not one (not one!!) nursery that sells most of the Orchidioides. There are 2-4 that periodically have U. nelumbifolia, 1-2 that rarely have U. humboldtii and nobody has any of the others.

If I want to order from Europe, there is the cost of phyto (usually ~$75 USD) before I even start adding plants and shipping. It gets expensive...

Damn, that's really a problem... I wanted to send a few D.m. 'Red Burgundy' to Matt and I didn't because the only way was to introduce them into TC and send these cultures to US. I'd like to help you somehow but unfortunately it's almost impossible to get fresh orchidoides seeds. I took that risk once and bought some U.alpina seeds with a location from Auyan Tepui, none has germinated and they weren't cheap:) Looks like you'll have to make a joint order one day - maybe you'll find some friends willing to order something too, and the costs will be shared then.

I think that you've just got to know the source. Most of the ones on ebay are too old to germinate. The one guy on ebay who sells all kinds of utric seeds (supposedly from Kamil's plants) admits they are months old (but kept in frig). That's not good enough for most utrics. Otoh, two of us had flowering U. nelumbifolia this past spring and had way more seeds than we knew what to do. So, if we get some flowers, it will be much easier to share...

I was just whining. I've received 2 orders from BCP (one last month & one a year ago) so I have most of his Orchidioides clones now (if I can keep them alive & get them to grow). There are some other nice plants from other Euro retailers that I'd love to have but they'll have to wait...
