I personally prefer silica sand instead of perlite. When I use both, I usually use more sand than perlite. I feel that the sand breaks the medium up better and gives it a nicer consistency for the plants' roots to grow into. It must be almost pure silica sand however, not beach sand nor river sand.
If it were me and the plants were healthy, I might transplant them if I thought they needed it (into a larger container or in better medium) despite having them only for two months.
