One question, old leaves from last year turned kinda black in the bright sun, is that normal?

All of the old leaves from last season will likely die in the next month or so. So yes, it's normal for them to turn black at some point.

When they turn black is it ok to cut them off or just leave them to rot?

You can cut them off to prevent mold and fungus, just be sure to only cut off the black part, and not the green so you don't expose the plant to harmful bacteria or mold. Good luck!

You can snip them off once they turn black, but leave anything that's green.
