Hey y'all!
So I recently introduced myself back into the world of CPs. I thought I had gotten some basics down and repotted a VFT & D. Venusta into a pot using clay pellets for drainage, LED grow light, CP-mix (peat+perlite) as a media and loaded up on distilled H2O..

The more I went down the CP-rabbit hole, the less I was satisfied with my set up...

Pic is for what I would like to get as a new setup.

With the sleepy season approaching, should I be worried about repotting?

I make up my own media and reuse takeout containers for pots. I am afraid I cannot help you.

I'm not sure what you are asking. Firstly, flytraps and Drosera venusta have different growing requirements so they cannot be grown in the same container. Flytraps require a winter dormancy period. Venusta does not. Secondly, self watering pots tend to cause more problems than they solve. Because of the reservoir you can never be sure where the water level is. You are better off with a pot in a tray. Thirdly, neither of those plants require extravagant mixes. Peat/perlite 50:50 or the carnivorous plant mix you listed above would work for both of them as is.

I guess my question is : should I be worried about repotting my VFT so close to its dormancy season or?

Does it need to be repotted immediately? If not, I'd wait until late winter to do this. If it does (pot is too small, soil is lousy), then go for it. The plant will get settled in long before dormancy starts.

If the VFT and the D. venusta are currently in the same pot, then yes, you do need to put them in separate pots before winter, because the VFT will need to be in a different location than the venusta for dormancy.

Is dormancy absolutely necessary? They're grown indoors under solid grow lights etc...

This will start a debate. Technically, dormancy isn't necessary if you force it through dormancy. This means keeping the plant at high light levels and feeding it regularly. It also should not experience any temperature drops, including those that you may see indoors from summer to winter. Even with the artificially forcing it to continue to grow, the plant stands a good chance of eventually becoming exhausted.

That being said, generally speaking you can get away with skipping one dormancy cycle as long as it returns to a regular schedule the next season. Seedlings can usually take two dormancy skips as long as they are fed. It is also possible to do a "soft" dormancy by just reducing the light and temperature levels and not feeding the plants. If you can keep it below 60 degrees with lower light and lower water, the plant should trigger its dormancy and wake up when the light is increased.

Dormancy was pretty scary for me the first time I did it last year, with my first VFT, but I was surprised at how simple it ended up being. I just put the plant in in my garage (usually 45-55 degrees in winter) in a tray of water, then let the tray dry before refilling. The plant is much bigger and stronger this year.
