FlytrapCare Carnivorous Plant Forums

Hello! I am new to the whole carnivorous plant thing. So far I have owned four carnivorous plants:

2 Dionaea Muscipula (One of which has died)
1 Sarracenia Purpurea Venosa
1 Drosera Venusta

I just received them all today, other than the Venus Flytrap that has died of course. I was wondering if anyone knows of a good website that sells carnivorous plants. I am making a terrarium and I am very unhappy with the quality of the plants that I bought aside from the Sarracenia Purpurea Venosa. I ordered from http://www.bugbitingplants.com.

This is a good question. I have ordered from several places and I have been happy with all of my plants except those from Cook's Carnivorous Plants, whose website is http://www.flytraps.com. The plants I got from them were very small and weak. Half of the plants I got from them died. These are the only carnivorous plants I've had die under my care so far.

I was really happy with the plants I got from http://www.flytrapshop.com. The price was good and the plants were large and healthy.

Thank you so much Matt! That helped a lot. The plants I ordered from RC Enterprises (http://www.bugbitingplants.com) were awful. Genevieve, my pitcher plant, is lovely. The others aren't so great. Vladimir, my flytrap, is completely green and there are already two dead traps on it. I didn't order the Dente variety so I am a bit disappointed. When I bought Peter (my first flytrap) he had lots of red coloring in his traps. Unfortunately I left him outside in the car and he died from excessive heat. Mordecai, my sundew, is barely even an inch big. I think that may be the thing I am the most disappointed with.

G'day flesh-cladmonster, if you are looking for a website that sells quality carnivorous plants at a reasonable price, I can recommend Triffid Park (http://www.triffidpark.com.au) in Eastern Australia. Shipping is generally quick & they have a great range of plants in stock. They will ship international and can meet quarantine regulations set by most countries. Photos on the website are not the greatest but the plant quality is second to none.

I don't know that particular species of sundew, but in general, sundews are very small. Sometimes they are only an inch around when they are full grown. You might want to see how big he'll get.

I actually think he is dying. I went away for the weekend and it seems he is a different shade now. He should be a pink and green and now the tips of his leaves are brown. And the company hasn't replied to me yet about the plants. I will be disputing the charge tomorrow evening if I don't hear from them by then.

you should check out carnivorousplantnursery.com and they sell fruit flies there too!

Hi there, Do you have a Botanical Garden near you? I got all mine there and they are very well taken care of. Also...I've never bought fruit flies. Just buy some cantaloupe. eat some and put some near the plants. I also keep my plants on a window sill to eat any flies that get in.

That's a good suggestion Aimee. When I was a kid and lived near St. Louis, MO, I would get Venus Fly Traps at the St. Louis Botanical Garden. That was one of the few places I could usually find them.

I'm not sure if we have a Botanical Garden near here. I thought about using some kind of fruit so that I would have flies for my plants, but since they are in a terrarium that isn't completely closed in, I didn't want to test it. I don't want fruit flies all in my bedroom! That would be awful! Thanks for the suggestion though. I'll try to find a way to do that without creating a big mess in my room.

We have all put together a nursery website rating under blogs.
