New here, but took the advice of most by buying some Better-Gro for cheap. Cleaned and picked it apart and some seemed still squishy, so I put the best bits in a cup if water. I let it soak for a day and this is the result. Is this normal and am I wrong for believing this is still alive and usable for growing more?

Uhhh, I think you're gonna have to wait more than a day to get any signs of life. I may be mistaken, but I really don't see any live moss in your pictures.

Welcome to the forum.
If you see existing moss turn green, most likely it's algae spores waking up and growing.
There could be some dormant sphagnum moss spores but they'll take a few months to wake up and they will be new growth.
New growth will be very small at first and will be a bright living green color.
Algae growth tends to be a khaki, military green color.
Just my 02¢ worth.

I think that's definitely worth trying to grow out. It looks like there's living tissue in there.

Thanks all for the welcomes and feedback. Moss is new to me so I appreciate the tips. The main reason I was thinking it might be alive/dormant was due to all of the color(both deep and bright red) along with a good amount having white tips on the heads. I will definitely try to recover and/or grow it.
