Hey everyone! For awhile my typical flytrap has been growing amazingly.

Just today though I noticed some traps appeared abnormally black.

From the photos does this look okay? There's definitely new healthy growth but some of its largest leaves are dying off.

Last time I saw something like this, it was my overwatered king Henry.

I guess it threw me off. Because a couple weeks ago, It was growing like you gave it drugs.

And now I'm seeing that trap death. So on edge since my king Henry got screwed.

That's just what they do. Mine all have that going on right now. It'll continue to grow and terminate leaves throughout the season

If you feed them a food item that is too large, the leaves will die. The ideal size for the food item should be maximum one third of the traps size. I hope this helped!

Nah. They feed themselves - and I basically check what they've caught daily. It was not caused by food.

I've been closely monitoring these flytraps.

Their growth still looks greatly concerning to me.

The discoloration on the leaves is suspect.

Those leaves look like you have a pest problem. Something is eating the leaves, which is what those yellow trails are. That would stress the plant and cause poor growth. You need to try and identify what the pest is and treat for it. If nothing else, submerging the entire plant under water for 24 to 48 hours, out of direct sunlight, may help to drown anything on it.

Note the circled leaf..

Original picture in June showed a brand new leaf. Picture taken today shows that petiole never opened and showing discoloration on the leaf itself.

I'm concerned about spider mites because I watched a video showing that once they get inside a trap. They basically just eat it until it doesn't work no good.

It should be noted that I believe this is growing in 100% lfsm. I was a newb when I potted this thing...

I was absolutely leaning towards pest problems. I haven't seen a damn thing though. I'm unsure how to further identify past these images.

Perhaps a broad spectrum product?https://www.lowes.com/pd/BAYER-ADVANCED ... 1000180241

Bioadvanced 3-1 is OK, it usually stunts growth for me for about a month and it grows funky traps for about a week after. The same thing happened to my Gremlin and it's either heat damage or spider mites. If you want to be safe, I'd get some Avid and Tetrasan from FTS. The tetrasan is optional, it's just there to kill off any eggs.

Actively seeking other input.

I haven't read of issues when using bioadvanced until you said something.

I really wanna use the bioadvanced because I can purchase it today... The products from FTS will take like a week.

I try to avoid chemicals, but use Bioadvanced more often than anything else when needed. It's one of the more mild ones, and works great unless you have a heavy infestation of bugs or fungus/mold. It still works if you have a bad case of mold or aphids, it just takes longer to start seeing progress, and more applications are necessary to bring it under control. If you're paying attention to your plants, you'll easily catch something early, and a light spray that covers the plant (the underside of the leaves too) applied a couple times a week usually clears up a problem in a couple of weeks. I have never seen any strange growth patterns after using Bioadvanced, but I also don't know how others apply it. If given a heavy dose, it could react by growing wonky traps for a minute. But I do a light spray, enough to wet the surface of the leaf without runoff. You don't need much, just enough to start working topically, and it has a slight systemic effect to continue working for a bit after the last application. However, although it advertises to be a miticide, it doesn't do much for spider mites that I've experienced.
If you think you have an issue, and insist on spraying something, use Bioadvanced and monitor for changes. If you know you have a problem, then treat accordingly. Most things can be treated with Bioadvanced, but if you know you have spider mites, I would suggest the Avid.

So I'm gonna be straight with y'all. Because I'm not mistake free.

I was brand new to fly traps when I originally potted this.

Mixed sphagnum with perlite very poorly and also put it into a special self watering pot. Top it off with the fact this thing looked WAYYY deeper than it should've been. I think my ass put it in with DRY sphagnum and then moistened it which basically just made the plant sink down.

Do I feel stupid? A little. But at least I've progressed to the point I can see the error of my ways.

Nevertheless, I looked through everything for pests. There's absolutely no sign of anything hurting the flytrap. The root system was extremely healthy and plentiful.

I repotted the flytrap (and it's small division(s)) with moist substrate this time (50/50 peat perlite with sphagnum and perlite on top).

A significantly larger portion of the organism is now above ground, and you can see how the leaves didn't grow quite as much out as they could have compared to the images I posted.

You can see how they basically just started laying directly on the media. Not good.

At this point I assume it's the improper drainage and rhizome depth.

The next few weeks will tell now that I've properly potted it.

I'm going to be honest when it concerns pest infestations. I have so many plants that I don't mess with Neem oil at all. I tried and they enjoyed the bath. I've seen everything from weevils to spider mites this year (both of those surprised me) and I show no mercy and go straight for a systemic. If I know it's a pest and I can't identify or find them, I hit both plant and media with Bayers (BIoadvanced) 3-in-1 and it takes care of it for me. I use the measurement recommended, 5 1/4 tbsp per gallon. I've never noticed any significant change in trap growth after using it. I've even used Maxsea days later with no issue (kinda by mistake). I've used it on every CP from Byblis to Cephalotus to Pinguicula and really the only issues I've ever had were with Drosera. It won't kill the plant but man do they look ratty if they get hit hard. If you go that route, it's important to spray the media as well to ensure no eggs spring up after the fact and come back. Also something to consider is if you do that, it will continue to kill insects for a while afterwards.

Edit: The rhizome depth and possible compiling water toxicity from a self watering pot will definitely not do a flytrap any favors but neither of those would explain the coloration of the leaves. Perhaps though, you took out the issue when you bare rooted the plant. If it continues, I'd treat the plant. Also, if your plant is now more above ground and it is outside, don't get nervous when the white turns red.
