Hi everyone,

New guy here and can’t seem to find exactly what is needed for my pitcher plant. I got this plant in a hanging pot about 2 years ago

and it had about 8 beautiful large pitchers on it. I keep it in a pot that I add distilled water to the reservoir and mist it down couple times a day. The plant lives on my screened porch and gets lots of indirect sunlight but all the original pitchers have died off and hasn’t put on any new ones in over a year. The plant looks healthy and is now about 3 feet long with long tendrils as you can see in the pictures but not a single pitcher! What am I doing wrong???

Live south of Atlanta Georgia so upper 60’s to mid 70’s at night with 80/90 during the day with normal high humidity and I can’t remember the type but think it’s a nepenthes alata

I keep the water reservoir full and the moss stays moist is it possible I’m giving it too much water?.

Holy moly! The plant itself looks amazing! Very robust and healthy! My only advice would be that it might need a little bit more light. That's just my opinion. I grow my Nepenthes indoors and the pitcher production definitely varies by species, so take that with a grain of salt.

You have pretty much the same summer weather as me. Try hanging where it gets 2-4 hours of none high noon sun light. Mine get sun from dawn till 10am-11am. Ventrata can really take more sun then most, when the leaves start getting a orange hue its near its upper limit.

In the winter time i keep mine in a south facing wall of glass. It gets all day full sun filtered by glass and it just gets that orange hue and grows like a weed.

Thanks for the info, in the winter it sits at a window facing mostly west and seems to love it there because it continues to grow but outside it hangs in a screened porch facing N/W and gets filtered sun from late afternoon to sundown. I did have it outside for awhile where it got mostly full sun more than half of the day and leaves started changing colors so I brought it back onto the porch. It seems to be really healthy and long tendrils just no pitchers.

Can you show some close-ups of the tendrils' ends, where the pitchers would normally start to form?

Here are a few, the plant otherwise is super healthy and keeps growing new leaves, any help would be greatly appreciated. When I first got it I had around 6 to 10 large pitchers.

The leaves change color because it's getting more light, I'd bring it back outside and give us updates, it doesn't seem to be getting enough sunlight. The leaves normally change color if they get more light.

You're not doing anything wrong, don't worry. The plant is making all the food it needs via photosynthesis, so it has no need to grow traps for bugs.

That's... odd. Even the most experienced growers have traps. Even with completely red leaves it would still pitcher.

I’m going to relocate it to place where it gets more direct sunlight for more hours a day and see what that does. If it like it’s new location what kind of timeframe would I see the start of pitcher growth? I’m just concerned because the sun is so hot and intense here south of Atlanta and don’t want to burn it..

Nepenthes don't like direct sunlight, moving it to a spot with more direct sunlight may be more detrimental than beneficial.
If the plant needs pitchers, it will expend the resources to grow them. If it is getting everything it needs, it's not going to go out of its way to grow new structures.

I don't know why you are saying that they won't pitcher because they're taking too good of care. I've never once heard of that phenomenon. Even with the most experienced growers, the plants still need pitchers for nutrients.
