Two days ago, me and my mom left at 4 am to begin our journy to Wilmington! Overall, the trip went quite well with the exception of a minor sideswipe. Stupid sleepy driver! We left soooo early because we wanted to avoid the Chicago rush hour as much as possible. We drove threw a corner of Illinois, most of Indiana, all of Ohio, and we stayed in West Virginia for a night. Overall, the drive from WI to WV was about 10.5 hours. It was so beautiful driving threw WV with all of the forests, mountains, and hills. Our hotel was, um, interesting. The bottom floor was in renavation, the elevator stopped working, they turned the water off for, like, two hours, when the water was turned back on, it was lukewarm - not warm enough for a shower, and the temperature thing on the faucet in the bathroom was flip-flopped. It wasn't too bad; we just found it funny.

On the way to NC once we left the hotel, we got to drive threw a freakin' mountain! Form WV to NC, the drive was about 6-7 hours.

Once we arrived in the Wilmington area, we went to the Stanely Rehder Carnivorous Plant Gardens and the Green Swamp Preserve. It was amazing at Green Swamp! There were SO MANY SUNDEWS; D. brevifolia(?), capillaris, and intermedia. And, believe it or not, more VFTs. Like, hundreds and hundreds. It was easy to tell cause of their flowers. There were also S. flava, rubra, purpurea, and rosea(?).

Here are some pics:

Oh, really? I it didn't look like the other purps I saw. It had a larger lid, squater body, and it was very red with no green coloration or any veins at all. There was also a flava that was literally the largest sarr I have ever seen. I'm not kidding when I say this, this flava was almost as tall as me and I'm about 5'4. It was on a tiny mound of soil, but this mound was like 3 inches tall. The rhizome started a little bit above my ankle and that tallest pitcher (that it has now; it only has one pitcher) reached my chin.

I'm just barely in this pic so I can give you some perspective

We wenk back to green swamp and measured the height of that flava the best that we could. It's about 4 ft tall.

If it was a rosea, then someone planted it there. Sarracenia rosea is native to the western Florida panhandle, Alabama, and Mississippi. You probably found an extra-chunky purpurea. I have some that are pretty tubby. I also have some that are red all over; check this one out:

A few months ago, I traded this plant to Mike Wang (I have another division of it). Turns out that it was descended from a batch his purps that got destroyed by a roving pack of trash pandas racoons. Mike had sold this one before the raiders hit.

The last time I was at Stanley Rehder, there was an enormous flava in the middle of the field. I'm six feet tall, and many of its pitchers easily came up to my waist.

Yeah, the purp I thought was rosea was very chunky and very deep red. That's really awesome how your purp from Mike Wang got around. If you every have a division for sale in the future, let me know. I'm looking for a really nice purp.
