Does anyone grow aquatic plants? I have a 30 gallon water trough (for animals), and am looking for ideas on stuff to grow to help keep the water clean(er) and shaded.

I would recommend "salvinia minima" but in zone 9 it would be a risk to cause a ecological disaster if it got into a body of water.

I have salvinia, duckweed, azolla, and phyllanthus in my CP water trays to keep TDS down. But now I have a decent size stock tank so I wanted to try some bigger plants :)

(I do live in zone 9, but it's basically a desert here. no bodies of water to contaminate unless they jump into my bathtub.)

https://www.aquariadise.com/water-lily/

Seems like they need to be planted in a pot and then submerged?? Here's a good video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DN-v1RR7png

Typha, Iris, Water lettuce, and Lilies. Water lettuce is banned in CA though. I found a good website that sells pond plants; https://pondmegastore.com/ They also have a good beginner page: https://pondmegastore.com/pages/water-g ... -beginners

If you get a really nice setup you could add some fish too. Hope this helps

Yeah, get a pond! We can be pond buddies :D I just can't look at a tub of water without thinking I need to put plants in it.

You could try lotus flowers/plants (I don't know if you would call them plants or just flowers because I've never had them before).

You can try water hyacinth if there's an area of water with them you can take them they're invasive plants but you can just take them from the wild.

in addition to the floating plants everyone else mentions: water lettuce, salvinia cucullata, amazon frogbit, Guppy grass, and hornwort are all good options.
