Hi all, I recently cut these pieces (about 2 inches each) of rhizome from my S. Leucophylla green. My question is, would you cut into the rhizome to encourage growth points? It seems some people do while others just let them be.

Chipping it up does help. Not necessary, but it does encourage growth.

I was wondering the same, my sarr is growing from only one side of the rhizome, and it’s just waking up I want it to grow from both sides and I wonder if I can split it. It’s a 2yr X (guess the variety )

I always take a few nicks out of the rhizome with a knife. It seems to promote growth.

No I would not, considering how easily, and quickly, Sarrs develop new growth points on their own without any interference, it never even crossed my mind to try this.

Ok I’m gonna take a wild guess and say…S. jonesii?? Crazy, I know.

Close, but not quite, I guess it’s hard to guess because this pitcher looks nothing like the mature ones last year. It’s a Judith Hindle I guess I don’t have pics of mature big pitchers but gere are some dormant ones with the correct color of pitchers.

Oh cool! I need to get me one of those. I had one but ironically, it was the only one of my plants to die from root rot last year. Glad yours is doing well!

I also have a Judith hindle but it’s kind of small right now

Thanks @thepitchergrower, @Panman, and @Huntsmanshorn, I decided to leave them be for now but if I get antsy I might try cutting one of them for a comparison. Hopefully later this season I’ll be posting pics of the new growth.

You can put V shaped notches across the rhizome, to just less than half the rhizome depth, which encourages growth from adjacent the notches.
