There's an eBay seller called ads.ink who has all sorts of interesting-colored live sphagnum moss. Now that the weather has cooled off, his
stock
is back. His mosses are pretty but not cheap: most of the quart-sized bags cost $25, and the extra-red ones are $35.

The word "stock" is underlined with a link.

The dotted underline is too easy to miss. I edited my post and changed the link text to dark blue. I think I'll start doing that for all embedded links from now one.

I decided to spring for some live sphagnum moss from ads.ink. This seller names the moss according to its color. Here's what I got:

25 bucks (each) got a pleated, quart, ZipLoc bag full of moss. The strands are 3-4 inches (7.5-10 cm) long. If I had cut each strand into thirds or quarters, then a bag would've been almost enough to cover a 1020 tray (if only I had the space...). The seller also has some very nice red moss and red-tipped green, but they run 35 bucks a bag, and that was just too rich for my wallet.

I'm propagating what I bought in deep food-storage containers, fingers crossed that it adapts to the climate in North Carolina.

Most of it did okay, but I don't think the Maine moss was particularly thrilled with the North Carolina climate. I'm going to stick with the local species. They aren't as colorful, but they grow very well here.

Bug_cemetery, your about the same latitude as Maine, aren't you? Big difference between there and NC. Sounds like the eBay moss's growth habits are kind of latitude dependent, maye?
