It is getting cold here in Denver. I think the first freeze with be this week. I plan on putting my Sarracenia down in the basement for the next 5 months or so. Quick question. Do I trim all the pitchers off the plants or just leave them be?

I keep reading different things.

Thanks in advance.

It's not necessary to trim the pitchers off, but you can if you would prefer to. Won't hurt the plant. But leaving some green on can give an energy boost when spring comes around since they'll already have some material to photosynthesize with.

Trim the dead stuff off to open it up and allow airflow to the rhizome. If you want to trim them all, do it, but leave about three inches of green for photosynthesis next Spring.

I should also note that it can be species-dependent. You don't want to trim purpurea and psittacina or hybrids with these with a low growth habit because they depend on having intact pitchers that last through winter. Plants that produce phyllodia will care the least about having their pitchers cut (don't cut the phyllodia of course.)
