Well, its grasshopper season in Arizona. How do you guys think I can protect my plants on a budget?

You can always nuke your CPs with neem oil... Preferably Bayer 3 in 1 (this kills everything).
A softer alternative would be a garlic spray.

A net would work. Just make sure that it's tight to the ground on all sides.
