Flytrap Store Greenhouse South :)

TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) of several water sources
  • Tapwater -- 227 (enough to kill a Venus Flytrap in a few weeks)
  • Reverse Osmosis under sink unit -- 26
  • Collected Rainwater -- 6 (includes small amount of soluble material from rooftop and sides of tank)

Well, collected rainwater is almost as pure as artificially distilled water. Reverse osmosis is very effective at removing almost all dissolved solids and the difference between it and distilled or rain water is negligible as far as carnivorous plants are concerned. Reverse osmosis water is fine and very good for the plants.

Just for comparison, even the TDS of pure sphagnum peat moss alone, after distilled water has been added to it to the saturation point and allowed to sit for 12-16 hours, can be 65 or more, so don't worry too much about the small amount of residual TDS in reverse osmosis water. :)

Hi Allen, it's just one I bought at a nearby Sam's Club a few years ago. It's much like the under-sink reverse osmosis systems at the following websites:

Hah, I like this Steve. I'm going to copy it!

TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) of several water sources
  • Tapwater -- 54 (low enough to use directly from the tap on most CPs if allowing the water to run out the bottom of the pot)
  • Reverse Osmosis under sink unit -- 1 (almost as good as distilled water!)
  • Collected Rainwater -- 11 (includes small amount of soluble material from rooftop)

That's great, Xeno. My reverse-osmosis TDS reading (26) might simply be from an RO membrane that is older and might need to be replaced soon. It's great that yours is giving you an extremely effective TDS reading of only 1, lower than most collected rain water! :D

Your plants will love you for your new reverse-osmosis unit's water.
