Its been years since I've had sundews and I've lost the notebook where I kept all my notes. I want to start my collection again with some D.rotundifolia. I know they have a dormancy period. Back when I lived on Long Island,New York it wasn't a problem it didn't get below freezing and was relatively 'dry/moist' and I just let them stay outside, sometimes move them under the porch or into the garage.

Now, I live upstate, near Saratoga, New York, and I'm trying to figure out how would I prepare a single small plant for dormancy. It gets bitterly cold, below freezing and the weather in winter is very wet, with frequent snow, snow melt, spring like weather before freezing again. I live in an apartment, so I don't have a garage. Should I slip pot the smaller pot into a larger pot? Cover it with a bucket? Bury it under pine needles? Stick it in the fridge for a few months?

I live near Milwaukee and we have long cold fugly Winters.
Drosera rotundifolia stays outside here until the first frost.
By that time, it has developed a Hibernaculum to get it through Winter.
I put it in my basement under lights. (synced with local Sunrise/Sunset)
In the Spring, once the nights get up to 45 degrees or so, I bring him back outside.

What would you say is temperature of your basement in winter?

My basement is unfinished with just one tiny heating/cooling vent for the whole basement.
Temperature varies but I've seen it get down to upper 40s in the coldest part of Winter.
Daytime temps are low to mid 60s.
Nighttime temps are usually low 60s to 50s.
The light is more important than the temperature once it forms a hibernaculum.
It won't start waking up until it sees days with more than 12 hours of daylight.

Oh that's fairy warm still, I think my downstairs entrance way is around that temp during the winter. And I'll that day light to my notes. Thanks.
