I'm getting ready to donate some seeds to the seed bank and was wondering if other donors test their seed before sending it in? While I think it would be good to know the viability of the seed, I also see the benefit of getting fresh seeds to germinate. What are your thoughts?

It's a nice idea unless the seeds require cold stratification; then there's a long wait before the donation. I'd rather get fresh seeds into other people's hands.

I tested the Sarracenia flava seeds that I donated last fall by sprinkling a bunch of them in a seed tray and sticking it outside for the winter. Now I have a boatload of little flava's:

I send them in as soon as I have enough. If it's a plant that hasn't set seeds before, I hold some back and try to germinate them. But I've discovered my success (or lack thereof) doesn't accurately reflect how well other people do with them. There are just too many variables.

Thanks, all. I'll be sending them in next week so they won't sit in ChefDean's mailbox while he is out of town. I am going to hold back a pack for me to try.

I think if a large number of seeds are created and they look good then they are most likely good. You can always test germinate and send them in at the same time.
