one thing to do is to check the TDS of the rainwater once you collect some. If the roof has some chemicals or other thing that get into the rainwater, it may not be great for CPs.

Lucky you. We're in the middle of a drought in eastern North Carolina. I've drained my 60-gallon (227-liter) rain barrel 3 times in the past 2 months. I've already hit Target once for a massive load of distilled water and will probably do it again next week. There's rain in the forecast for this afternoon and evening, keeping my fingers crossed that it's more than a light shower.

I posted a thread on a nice, affordable reverse osmosis / deionizing filter on Amazon. For making water between rain barrel fills, it is great. It is also nice if you do not have a tremendously large water requirement. I make 55 gals at a time and it lasts me a week or so. Here is the link in case you’re interested

I collect rainwater when I can but it ain't easy. I live in 3rd floor apt and to collect any useful amount of rain water, I have to hope the winds come from the east ... which they rarely do ... and that it is a heavy rain as I am limited to setting container out on my balcony.

The one thing that I don't like about RO units is the amount of waste water produced per gallon of RO water. I had to go to the manufacturer's web page to find it:

Typical Rejection Rate: 1:3.4

The average person would use 4.4 gallons of tap water to produce 1 gallon of RO. So for 55 gallons of RO, that's 187 gallons of waste. I could always use that to water the garden or yard. Is your water/sewer bill noticeably higher since you started using the RO unit?

My collected rainwater are 3ppm at most 10ppm
