When my VFTs went dormant last year, they were well sized. Now this year coming out of dormancy, one seems to be having trouble.
But there one next to it grown in the exact same conditions seemed to be doing pretty good. I grew them outdoors in full sun all of last year and they thrived. I brought them in our shed during winter while they were dormant. I know you are supposed to have them outside during the winter too, but I just forgot to put them back outside on days I brought them back in. Is there something I did wrong?

They both look fairly healthy to me - I know the traps on the bottom one aren't quite "normal" looking but I think it's common for a plant's first traps of the year to look weird. At least that has happened to mine before, and then eventually the plant starts making normal leaves.

PS I had a similar (but worse) experience where I had two plants I bought at the same time sitting in the same tray, in the same conditions outside over the winter. One died, one is doing just fine. These were "death cube" plants so they may even have been genetically identical. It just goes to show you that not all plants react the same way to similar conditions.

These were Walmart "death cylinders". Though they weren't really death cylinders because they were very healthy when I got them.

Looking at your pictures, it appears that the original plant in the first picture died and it spawned a new plant from what was left of the rhizome. I say that because of the large mass of dead material in the center that looks like where the original leaves came from and the new one is poking off of the side.

Did you repot them this winter or spring? They greatly benefit from a seasonal repot and the one that's struggling is showing signs of wanting to be repotted. Both of the others that are doing better could also stand to be freshened up too.

I repotted them earlier this spring right before they came out of dormancy.

On another note, does that pot have drainage holes? Also, what soil is it potted in? I see what looks like some gravel or something. Keeping it too wet and/or having something in the soil mix they don't like, could be what lead to the demise of the one plant.

It does have drain holes, it is made from shpagnum peat moss and washed sand rock, it's the same thing they grew in last year and they thrived. I wait until the top 1/2 inch or so is dry to water it, it has been really wet for the past week and a half because it has rained everyday.
