The picnic table was built by my father back in the early 70s. Maybe 73 or so, out of what I imagine was, back then, to be some old forest growth red wood. Bet you cannot get that any more...

You can see the fancy bought internet quality greenhouse plant that I fried. Was unprepared for what I was in for. The other 2 ace hardware death cube specimens. @ ~7 o'clock (the fancy plant)

@ 4 o'clock and one that is back and to the left... Back and to the left.... Back and to the left... Are 2 little junior units that appeared to thrive but disappeared between waterings. Which was not that extreme of conditions. Must of been ultra shallow roots.

Some new growth started from the center of both plants.

Planted that day, September the 4th, 2020.

The nickle did not last long. I got a toothpick thing going on in later photos.

Fake plastic pot. You'll see in the picture I'm about to post that I also modified said plastic pot. Are we in opposition of the plastic pot?

But we did survive the winter. Outdoors all winter except for the few brutal cold spells. I've got about 60 bucks in R&D in my pot. Insulated and a thermostatically controlled 12 foot (I think) household pipe tape. Kicking in @ 38°F and out @ 45°. Too cold to leave uncovered down at 22°F but fine @ 27. Many a winter night on the Kansas plains out checking the status of the plant.

Seed stalks coming. Plant looks to me to be healthy enough for reproduction. Got sunlight all dormancy long.

I looked at the climate for Topeka KS, it looks like you would need minimal protection like just wind protection. Pine needle mulch or unheated building should be fine.
