Hello,
Is this a good bog garden. I added pine shavings to help retain some heat during winter.

I have something kind of like that. mine is just a big pot filled with 50/50 peat/perlite with a top layer of sand just for decoration. It sits in a shallow trey of water in full direct sunlight no shade at all.

I noticed today that my flytraps are starting to wake up so i picked dead traps off and took this photo.

Hi lazar
Its a bit difficult to say without some more information. I assume you are in the Northern hemisphere and the plants are outside?
It looks like they are freshly repotted, so are looking a bit sad, but given good conditions should pick up.
Has the pot got a drain?
The wood shavings at that depth of application are unlikely to do much as an insulation and will probably blow away while they are dry, and when they get wet will flatten against the surface, but won't cause a problem.
Did they get exposed to a cold snap soon after you planted them?
If the weather warms up they will be fine.

Cheers
Steve

I’d avoid the wood shavings if it were me only because it would add organic matter to the mix that may break down (if the wind does not blow it away) .

Yeah I live in the northern hemisphere. I have had the plants for a year now. They are dormant and have some freeze damage which is why they don’t look nice. The pot doesn’t have drainage holes but I have drilled small holes on the side to drain some excess water. I added lava rocks at the bottom of the pot to have for dranaige. I will remove the pine shavings. Can I use New Zealand spagnum moss as a top dressing

Thanks. Is it fine if I kept my pot in a open space? It sometimes rains a lot during the winter. Also what plants grow well with VFTs

As long as the pot has good drainage, it will be fine in the open. Good companions are temperate drosera. Intermedia and filiformis are good choices. Rotundifolia is a good choice if you are up north. Sarracenia are good companions also but you have to watch their size and water requirements. Purpurea would be a good choice as it is compact and slow growing.

That is what I have for my bogs and they do well. Just so that it doesn't hold too much water for too long. Many sarrs and drosera don't mind being waterlogged but flytraps do.

One more question. Is it normal for VFTs to only have new growth that is slow growing at this time. My plant doesn’t have any actual traps and the only green on my plant is new growth.
