I was asked by a manager at work today if I wanted to take home these three sad looking nepenthes. She said that if I didn’t, they’d be tossed. Now I have three very neglected nepenthes that I haven’t really a clue how to take care of. I don’t even know what kind they are as they are simply labeled as “carnivorous plant”. I’m guessing they aren’t too rare though. All I did was sit them in a tray of water and moisten their pots a bit as they were all bone dry. Probably partially why they look so rough. Now what? I can’t keep them inside as my cat will make a snack out of them. Help?!

Make sure they’re not sitting in water at all times they’re roots can go rotten. They like humidity and not too much direct sun. A lot of people grow on windowsills.
Make sure to water with distilled, rain, or reverse osmosis as they don’t like minerals from water.

I would wash out the media in the pots, run a lot of water to push out anything bad. place then plants in full shade as much blue sky as you can just no direct sun. keep the media in the pot moist(water must drain out) with mineral free water. you can slowly move the plants up to 4 hours of direct sunlight over time(avoid high noon sun). it could take a month to see new growth. if it grows(lives) i suggest you up pot it into a larger pot just pack LFSM around what ever is the the pot now. the little pots will dry very fast more media will make it easy to care for.

avoid fertilizers salts metals just like your flytraps
90% they are ventrata take inside when night time temps drop below 50f

What a turn around! I just watered them is all. Do they need a hanging pot? And can I use my organic peat moss? Or does it have to be LFSM?

I don’t use hanging pot. I like mesh (net) pots myself, but you need to keep an eye as they dry out the media quicker. That’s why I like them actually

I would use the sphagnum. If you were to use that peat it would have to be mixed in with a bunch of other stuff because they’re roots like drainage.
They’re lookin better already!

I picked up some Better-Gro Orchid Moss from Lowe’s on my way home from work. Will that work? It says it’s premium Sphagnum moss on the package.

Great! I repotted each Nep in a larger, 4 inch diameter, plastic pot and will put them in my back yard where it’s shady most of the day. I just have to wait until I’m sure the nights won’t dip below 50F.
