My Drosera regia plants are waking up from their semi-dormancy and putting out new growth.
I caught the first fly of the year a day or two ago and fed him to one of my kings.
Watching regia wrap several times around its prey never gets old.

Regia ends in an “A” so my brain wants to believe it is feminine - so would that make it a queen, and not a king ? But I know in some languages there are exceptions to all rules.

I could never fully understand the gender endings of Spanish and languages similar to it.
In Spanish, a slug is a "babosa" (feminine ending).
I asked a native speaker what is a male slug called, they told me a slug is a babosa, no matter if it's a male slug or a female slug.
So if they want to say a Drosera regia is a King Sundew, who am I to argue?

I'm just jealous you can grow them in an environment where they can go dormant lol. I'm betting they can get pretty large in those conditions.

I just grow them in my basement.
Light/photoperiod follows natural local sunrise/sunset times.
My basement is only minimally heated so temperatures at floor level drop down to the upper 40s, lower 50s.
These two factors cause the bigger mature-ish plants to die back to a gnarly growth bud, almost hibernaculum-like in appearance.
It'll be interesting to see if some of them flower this year.
Leaves were 6 - 8 inches long last year, so I'm hoping for flowers.
My colony of 6 plants is growing in a one gallon nursery pot.
I should transplant to a bigger pot and split them up.

Looks great! Super healthy specimen! Lots of Drosera are starting to look really dewy for the year again.
