Hi everyone,

This is my first flytrap. Ever since I got it all the existing flytraps turned black. There has been a lot of new growth but most of the traps remain tiny and green. The ones that did get bigger don't work ie they don't close.
Also the leaves have started turning a bit brown. I water it once a week or twice a week with distilled water and they get a lot of sun. What am I doing wrong? Would appreciate any help.

Three things to check.
1. Water - Are you using RO, distilled, or rain water? I see it is inside an outer pot. How often are you watering it? Does it sit in water? The surface looks pretty dry.
2. Soil - What is it potted in? It looks like it has sphagnum moss in it, but what else?
3. Light - How much and what kind of light is it getting? Is it outside or inside? It needs 4 - 6 hours of direct sunlight or an equivalent.

I use distilled water. I let it sit in water for about 10 minutes once or twice a week. It's indoors on a windowsill where It gets a lot of bright sun for atleast 8 hours .
Not sure about the soil mix though.

The soil seems to be 100% peat moss. I agree with Panman, 10 minutes of water once or twice a week doesn't seem to be enough (some of the leaves look dried). I usually sit my flytraps in water for a day and let the water dry up the next day. I would continue this method throughout the week. My plants seem fine with the soil moist (not wet). I'm thinking that you might want to repot the flytrap in a soil mix of 50:50 peat moss and perlite if it isn't looking so good.

Looks like you have a three issues that I can see.
You're watering with distilled water, this is good, but the media needs to stay moist. 10 minutes a couple times a week doesn't seem to be enough.
You're not sure about the soil mix, that can be a problem. I would repot into long fiber sphagnum moss or a 4:1 peat:perlite mix. Pure peat is OK. Then you'll know what it is planted in.
These plants need strong artificial lighting if kept indoors, but, ideally, should be kept outside in direct sunlight for at least 5 or 6 hours per day. Sunlight filtered through a window just isn't enough, even if it the light is coming through the window light from sunup to sundown, it's not enough.
The good news is your plant is still green, and doesn't look too bad. A few changes in its care and it will come around.
