My water trays are starting to look like they are storing leftovers at Grammas house. I have been reusing any container I can get my hands on for seperating plants and starting seeds. I have cottage cheese containers (the nice deep ones!) whole foods soups, cat treat bin, yogurt containers, etc. I also have grass for the guinea pigs growing in red robin take out dishes These are ok to use correct?? Anyone else do this??

I use pitchers to mix up some soil I sell, they are very rarely used and when used for something other than soil they are washed, I also use it to mix soil for my own plants and they do okay in it.

I’m having difficulties trying to locate 1020trays with no drain holes that are anything other than black. I know it is slightly off topic, but what are you using for the trays from a recycled aspect ?

I reuse the plastic bowls from microwave meals. They're good for pots up to 5.5-inch / 14 cm in diameter. The trays for take-out food are handy, too. I have a couple trays from large orders of Culver's cheese curds that are currently being used to growing sphagnum moss. I don't expect them to last more than 1 or 2 seasons at the most, but they're good while they last.

@Supercazolla: If you don't need deep trays, these white 1020 trays work well. They're more expensive than the standard trays, but they're good for flytraps in smaller pots.

They aren't completely white, but the black exterior won't soak up anywhere near as much heat as all-black trays.

If you're willing to dedicate yourself to eating a WHOLE LOT OF YOGURT, you can get this fantastic deepish white pot (and a lid for a tray!)

@Panman wow you've got a nice organized setup there. Love those flytraps and the live sphagnum. My greenhouse is a mess! Even though I have a 48 x 20 table and a rack it's still so messy.

You mean everyone doesn't do stuff like this? For you carnivores out there, the plastic trays that things like ground turkey come in are quite handy. I also use lids from peanut butter and such as saucers. Works well as they have a little depth to them.

Now the big Q .... Have any of you ever bought a container of snacks or whatnot that you might otherwise have decided to "be strong and just say no" because you started thinking how handy that container could be for plants or critters?

I use small yogurt cups (like Panman's). They make great starter pots.
