This November I decided to try some leaf pullings for the first time on a Dinonea typical. To my great surprise, two baby flytraps have sprouted so far, with some other leaves still looking promising.

Since the container I am using is quite shallow, eventually I will need to move them to a normal pot. I wanted to know if there are any risks to transplanting them now, or if it is best to wait a certain amount of time before moving a baby plant? If so, how long: two months, six months?

I would wait 5-6 months, until the plants reach a decent size.

Thanks for the reply. I'm now seeing sprouts on almost all of the leaves. Since I don't need that many plantlets, I'm going to do an experiment.

I will replant two babies to see how they do, but I'll leave the rest to grow in the small tray for the next 6 months. Then I'll compare the growth

An update on the progress. The transplanted leaf pullings have been thriving.

Also, almost all the remaining pullings have sprouted now, but with much smaller plants than the first ones. In the end, only one leaf died without sprouting a new plantlet! It took the stragglers 3 months to sprout.

Thanks! I'm going to grow them to adult size then gift them to friends when I run out of space.

Final update.

I planted them all into a large pot. All the leaves are producing functional traps. Though as you can see, some are taking longer to grow in size than others.

Did your container that you grew them in have a lid on it? If so how often did you air it and how often did you change the water? Looking at trying some propagation myself soon.

The container had a lid, but it was always slightly open. I'd open it up every one or two days to air out and mist with water (I never needed to 'change' the water). The longest I left it without opening the lid was about a week.

I might not have needed to open the lid so often, but I was worried about mold.
