New to live sphagnum

Hi all. I'm new to using live sphagnum for anything but a top dressing. I've got a boatload of it and have top dressed all three of my outdoor bogs and still have this left.

I'm going to start potting up some neps and VFT in live moss. Do I fill the pot with it, or do I put dried lfsm in the bottom since the live in the bottom will die anyway. How do you use live moss?

I would just use it for the top. It would probably die on the bottom like you said.

I believe neps don’t like live Sphagnum as an actual media since it stays too wet

Nooooo

. Don't use it all. Make a couple tubs using large clear plastic containers. Put the sphagnum in it, on some deadlfs. If you maxsea it, you will have a never ending supply of sphagnum. And you can trade it.

I have a few pots of VFT in live sphagnum. I'd only recommend doing larger mature rhizomes as wet spells or humid cloudy days during summer established moss will just explode. Granted it took a few months to figure itself out, but the pots I have it in are welling with moss now.

If desired, I'll dump some pics of the small pots.

Top dressing or actual media? Watering frequencies usually affect what’s possible (after all I’ve seen people grow neps successfully in Peat). As a rule though, live sphag stays too wet for nep media
