Recently I have been reading some growing instructions for Drosera and in one of them they suggest feeding them egg whites.

Is that true, can you do that without killing the plant? Has someone here tried that before? If you have, please share some pictures.

I don't think I'll try it myself but it's an interesting idea.

Charles Darwin tried feeding albumin (eggwhite) to his Drosera rotundifolia when he was writing his book, "Insectivorous Plants".

He reported that they like it and it caused their tentacles to deflect and wrap around it.

This book was published in 1875.

It is in the public domain.

You can legally download it from Project Gutenberg's web pages.

The Savage Garden says (if I remember correctly,) that you can feed them chocolate, as well as egg whites. Worth a shot on extra capensis!

Somehow I don't think drosera have a "sweet tooth", erm...."sweet tentacle" as the case may be. Best to stick with the egg whites if you must feed them.

Didn't Darwin also report that these drosera responded to urine being dripped onto their tentacles? Urine that Darwin provided himself?

It's been too long since I read it.
I don't remember that one.
I'll look it up this week and see if I can find that one and the long term reaction to it.

I'm too greedy to share my chocolate, even with my plants.

Before I retired, I was an electrician who spent over 30 years in a chocolate factory.
Imagine a 10 pound chocolate bar.
Imagine a machine that makes 10 pound chocolate bars.
It makes about one bar a second.
They're roughly 12 inches by 18 inches by 1.25 inches thick.

They also had a bunch of production lines that made up 60000 pounds of chocolate chips per day.
Imagine all the chocolate chip cookies that would make.

I tried giving some chocolate to a Drosera.
The plant basically said "meh".
They want protein, not carbs and fat.

I always was able to sample the goods as long as discretion was used.
Eventually, you end up only nibbling on the good stuff.
It was gloriously good!
