To any of those out there - POOL FILTER SAND DOES NOT WORK. It's way too fine.

Look for 'sand-blasting sand', 'play sand', or even just use perlite. Do not, do not, use fine sand, unless you want concrete.

Some "pool filter sand" is silica sand, so it will work fine. But that is a generic term and can the product can come in many shapes and forms. The best sand I've found is 12 grit silica sand. Some pool filter sand is that grit, others are much finer.

I use Quikrete brand pool filter sand which is a coarser grain silica sand that works great (misleading because of the brand name). Can't speak for all brands and particle sizes but I learned of this brand on a forum and found it at home depot. It's a 50 pound bag and it ran about 13 dollars if I remember.

Hm. At my Home Depot, all the pool filter sand feels like the sakrete stuff you put in cement to make grout/concrete. I actually will go collect sand if it's not too hard. Beach sand from lakes/rivers is especially good.

Where I live, there are a few Agri Supply farm stores. I buy their medium-grit filter sand from Southern Products & Silica Co. in 100-pound bags (much to the annoyance of my back) for $10 each.

You could check aquarium stores (particularly those with saltwater fish) for plain white silica sand. Just make sure there are no shell or coral bits in it, and rinse it thoroughly before use.

Here is some suitable sand on Amazon. It gets to be a bit pricy in quantity because the shipping cost is so high (sand is pretty heavy).
