It can be found in low grasslands, to wetlands, to high mountain forests, between 3,000 and 9,000 feet in elevation above sea level.

Native to Canada in British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan Territories. Native in the US, west of the Mississippi, except for North Dakota, Kansaa, Oklahoma, Texas, and Arizona.

Although it is not of any of the recognized carnivorous plant species, there are published studies showing nutrients having been absorbed after being applied to the sticky stems and leaves.
