This thread is to keep updates of the Sarracenias I keep. I only have a few right now and all of them were bought earlier this year from Mike Wang.

Leucophylla Red AxB Select clone, Franklin County, FL - I received this plant in the mail on March 29 earlier this year. It seems this plant is a real sulker. The pitcher in the photo is the only pitcher it has produced so far and it just opened 2 days ago. The plant was shipped bare-root with all the foliage cut off except for a growing flower stalk, which I also promptly cut off after I potted the plant. Before this pitcher, all it has ever produced were phyllodia since I received it. Hopefully next season will be great for the plant!

Purpurea venosa, Tattnall County, GA - This plant has been an amazing and vigorous grower. I really love the veiny look and the very ruffly hoods.

This is how I received the plant on March 24 earlier this year - Just waking up from winter dormancy.

Rubra ancestral, Marion County, GA - An opportunistic spider built its web along the mouth of a pitcher. This plant was a freebie from Mike.

Spring 2019 update: The S. purpurea did really well last year. This photo shows the plant newly pruned of last year's dead leaves. This is my first growing season with a purpurea coming out of dormancy in my care. I received this plant March of last year with around the same amount of leaves as in this picture and it quickly filled the pot of new growth through the following months.

My question is, for next season, should I just go ahead and trim all the dead/dead looking leaves before it wakes up from dormancy? I always thought that purpureas typically keep most of their foliage for more than 1 season and carrying them well past the summer of the following year? This has not been my experience with this plant. I didn't trim at all at the start of spring but as the season progressed, I can see that it was affecting the plant negatively. Older foliage which used to be live just a few weeks ago started to dry up. New growth were showing as pale yellow instead of deep red which is indicative that it is not getting enough light while trying to grow through the old foliage. I went ahead and trimmed everything that looked dead including foliage that are half dry/half alive. Compare the previous photo that I posted last year and it shows just how much foliage I removed. I'm just not sure if this is normal for purpureas.

Cut off all dead pitchers. They are supposed to stay alive for two years but if they die then they’re not going to be very helpful to the plant

Thank you for the reply. The reason I asked was because I wasn't sure if I was doing anything wrong because the pitchers on my plant are not lasting as long as some people suggest they should last.

Dormancy is over! I trimmed off the previous growth to get them ready for this growing season! :D All four plants have flower buds going up, some of which I already cut off. Some flower buds are just starting to surface. The purpurea's rhizome now has two crowns and each crown has a flower bud starting to grow. There is also a very small budding crown on the side. I broke it from the main rhizome but I just left it in the pot as is.

Nice variety of Sarrs! I have the Tattnalls from mike also. Gorgeous plants. They should be established after a full year and I hope this second year there will be a lot of new growth on all of them for you.
