I recently received a bunch of Sarracenia and Darlington seeds and was wondering the best way to stratify and germinate the seeds. Whats the best method you have used? What is the most favorable conditions for germination (I.E. humidity, photoperiods, medium, and temperature). Thank you all for your time and Good Growing!

I’ve never tried darlingtonia seeds, but I treat my Sarracenia seeds like any other seeds: put them in some small amount of moistened peat moss in a bag in the fridge for 3 weeks, then I put them in a pot of peat/perlite (seeds seems to fall down too much for my liking in sphagnum) and I keep the small pot standing in a shallow water dish at all times until the seedlings sprout. Then I let the tray dry out a bit but refill it with water so they stand in it for most of the week. They are under my grow lights (on a pretty standard photoperiod 8am-5pm) until they are a few months old and can go outside.

Do you do this with fresh out of the plant seeds as well? My sarr will hopefully produce seeds and I was just going to sow them.

I’ve never allowed my own sarracenia to produce seed yet, all I’ve done is with seed collected in th fall and then sold to me in late winter.

Sarracenia need a winter to sprout. They will have poor germination if sprouted fresh. I stratified Darlingtonia for 4 weeks in the fridge on the FTS peat mix. They just sprouted- I am not sure how long they took, but I might be able to find out. I didn’t put them under particularly bright light

Do you think I could sow them and them cover the pot and put it outside for the winter? I'm afraid if I put them in the fridge that they'll disappear . Otherwise, how do you store them over winter?

You could probably stratify them outside. Just pretend the empty pot is filled with sarrs????

Ive got my seeds stratifying in damp live LFS lightly misted with a mineral free fungicide in the fridge. Fingers crossed in 4 weeks they should be ready to start germinating! Thanks for all the good info and Good Growing! I'll send pics when seeds start sprouting.
