I recently tried to pollinate some Pigs. This is my first time trying? How do you know if it worked and how long before they ripen?

Thanks for any help.

I have tried a few polinations and I'm pretty sure I have had success because the petals usualy all fall a few days after (or what's left of the petals). I usually pull the petals apart for better access to the stigma and anthers. But the top of my flower stalk starts to die before the plant would have a chance to even start producing seed in the ovaries. Any tips? Is this to much humidity maybe?

Here are a few swelling seed pods. The usually turn brownish when the are about ready. They will split open in the middle and if it worked there will be seeds inside. If not it will be empty or the stalk will just wither away before it swells. It depends on the species but usually it takes a couple/few weeks for seeds to mature.

I did some pollination work with mine and thought I'd failed because the stem shriveled, only to find a ripe seed capsule. They ripen faster than you'd think, and the seed capsules are small.

Just watch them like a hawk because once you see even the slightest split, they will open fully very quickly and it’s easy to lose the seed unless you put something underneath them or around them. Once I get seed pods that are getting close, I sometimes wrap a tiny bit of toilet paper around them so that they will open there and not spill seed into another pot or into the tray.

Once, I actually got a seedling growing on a chunk of algae that had been growing in the tray. It’s now growing on a little piece of rock. :-)Image
