FlytrapCare Carnivorous Plant Forums

Hi everyone

I have seen people on this forum saying that Flytraps can thrive when planted in long fibre sphagnam moss... as a backstory, my flytrap is currently not looking in the best of shape (I’m fairly sure it’s on its last legs unfortunately). I thought it was going into dormancy for winter but the traps have been growing back smaller and smaller over the past couple of months, and we are currently in summer in Australia, and right now I’m looking at a pot full of soil and the tiniest most pathetic little sprout (around 2mm high).... im watering regularly with demineralised water and it gets plenty of sunlight so I’m thinking it may be the soil, considering repotting to try and save the bulbs, which do still look white luckily. It’ll be my last ditch attempt before I give up

So I bought some moss from a gardening shop (assisted by a woman who had never heard of people using moss in flytrap soil and looked at me like I was an idiot).

Anyway she gave me this stuff which I’m doubting is the right kind of moss. Can someone give some advice? Can I re plant the bulbs in this?

I can't tell you what it is but its not sphagnum moss/what you'd want for sure.

there are a couple carnivorous plant nurseries in Australia -- if you check the forums here under vendors I think its called or something similar its down with the buy/sell/trade forums there is a page of known vendors in different areas, might be worth taking a look to check with them or asking them for advice of somewhere if they don't have what you need.

there are two basic routs you can go one being long fiber sphagnum moss which is good stuff it is what I prefer - a well known brand to consider picking up or ordering online if you need to is besgrow spagmoss

the alternate to straight LFSM would just be sphagnum peat moss (further composted sphagnum moss) with no additives mixed 50/50 with perlite. or some combo of perlite/silica sand

Thank you for your help! I didn’t think they were the same. I’ll go have a look at the vendors, hopefully I have a nursery near me who knows what they’re talking about...

that garden center sounds very unprofessional. this is the moss you want. its sold as sphagnum moss as well. you can buy it from fly trap store or online or at big chain hardware stores. I would try switching the water to just rain water also and if its hot Summer there, put a tray of water underneath it and let it soak it up from the bottom. they need a lot of water and it may be dry.

it looks like the moss NEHERP sells (which grows beautifully in vivariums!) but i don't think its suitable for CP's

Looks like Christmas tree moss to me
