I use coarse red clay. Top dressed with live sphagnum.

Like in this pot when the clay is still visible.

The plant seems to like it. Roots are healthy and abundant. Started to emerge from bottom of the pot.

If not mistaken, Akadama is volcanic in origin. There is no volcano here.
I think it should be ultisols, dominant soil type from hilly area in Southeast Asia. Almost every local nursery has it for sale. I am not expert in soil, just my guess.

Ah interesting. I don't think we get any of that around here. I've been trying a soil mix of calcined (hardened) clay, sand, and a small amount of peat but it still seems to be too wet. There's a very narrow window between the soil being dry enough for the plant to be happy, and it very suddenly collapsing due to dehydration.

I like live sphagnum as dressing for this reason. It turns white before the soil dries out completely. For large plant, usually I put the pot in water tray. If still dries out too often, either repot to larger pot, or trim the branches.

Your plant loves your environment! I love it!

I've been wondering lately, do older pitchers drop and regrow pitcher or are they there for quite some time?
